Best Game Engine For Modders And Why – GTA San Andreas
GTA San Andreas is the best game for modding, hands down. The reasons are many, but first I will talk a little bit about other game engines. Maybe you are coming over from Unreal Tournament or Source games – this is a whole different world from those!
Let’s take Unreal III for the first example; When you mod that, unless you do some really extensive stuff, the only thing you’re going to be able to do is create arena maps and have death matches in them. The beauty of game modding to me is what the game offers to would-be indies or industry hopeful. Read the rest of this entry »
Sixth Video For Liberty City II is Brilliant
Moniter57 is busy at work, perhaps with some others (and if so let me know) but I haven’t been around modding GTA for a while. The sixth video for Liberty City II was shown to the public on the 11th, and now I’m posting it 7 days later as a refresher for my friends and readers here.
You may remember when I wrote about Liberty City II back in July while intending to help with it.
I became uninspired pretty quickly, and it changed my mind about doing a Vice City HD mod as well. At least, I don’t want to do such a thing alone.
That is sort-of what makes this project so special is that the bulk of everything contributed to this mod, including vehicles, have been done by Moniter57 on his own, throughout his free time. Like I said, I would no longer dream of doing a remake of higher definition on my own with the other things I have on my plate and intend to add soon, so what makes this mod so awesome is that I know what it takes, and Moniter57 is doing brilliant things:
Working On San Andreas Liberty City II
While I’m not yet sure whether I will embark upon my own New Vice City, I have begun to help Monitor57 with his project, San Andreas Liberty City II. Over the past few days we managed to use DropBox to organize a bit of a beginning flow since until now Monitor57 had been going at it mostly alone.
A few others are helping, Read the rest of this entry »
DFF2WDR Released By Shadow-Link
‘DFF2WDR’ is a utility making it possible to convert your GTA San Andreas DFF models into GTA IV’s WDR format. It’s a small step toward making maps in GTA IV, with much more yet to be supported before we can really start playing around with GTA IV’s world, but it works. Shadow-Link made it and you can check it out get more details as you read more.
Here is DFF2WDR’s Official Page. Check back at his site often as Shadow-Link is updating this tool as bugs are found.
Remember to show some support in any way you can while you’re there – GTA Modding is entirely Third Party and free and can not exist without your peers – give Shadow-Link some thanks.
DFF2WDR is not yet perfect, but it is close and does what it was made to do. The latest Java RTE recommended, you can find this here if you find that you come into trouble using the DFF2WDR utility.
You can see what other users are doing during this testing phase at the DFF2WDR topic at GTANet’s GTAForums.
DFF2WDR has been downloaded over 100 times in various locations since its release to the hungry public late last night. I personally recommend you always get your tools strait from the source and to support your peers making it possible to mod GTA IV because as the example clearly shows: Without Shadow-Link’s utility, there is no other tool to take the place of DFF2WDR.
Shadow-Link: Thank you for helping to keep the scene alive, kudos to you for a handy little app.
Update: Got a better Java link for end users, developer network link was said to be confusing.
Chinatown Wars PSP (And What I Make Of It)

Chinatowns Wars PSP Speculation
Chinatown Wars PSP is coming. The announcement arrives only a few short months after the release of a game with the same name on the DS handheld. Already the gaming world tuned into the GTA franchise is wondering things like:
- How will they port a DS game to the non-touch PSP?
- Wouldn’t this be a step back from Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories?
- Will this end up on PlayStation Network or XBL Arcade as well?
- Will it still be Chinatown Wars without the touch screen, will they port it over in some unnatural way?
They, of course, being Rockstar Games. I’ve thought it over and I think that this is a brilliant concept and I’ll get into that soon. I’ll knock one off before the jump is placed: I see Chinatown Wars PSP being on PSN one way or another, even if only to support the PSP Go. I also think we’ll see some of the first PSP/PS3 interoperability within regard to the GTA series. Since the game is announced on a Sony platform, I feel it safe to rule out the XBL Arcade for the time being. Read the rest of this entry »
Ballad Of Gay Tony + TL&D on ONE GTA DISC? PS3 Soon?
With the T2 press release for their Ballad Of Gay Tony episodic content, Rockstar Games’ second episodic release for the new Liberty City found in Grand Theft Auto IV, there came a bit of a shocker to the gaming community worldwide: This second episode will be delivered not only the same way as Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned was delivered, but will also be packaged with The Lost & Damned, that’s both episodes on old-style DVD, for $39.99.
This does not include, of course, the vanilla GTA IV experience. Read the rest of this entry »
